The Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) – Foundations of Mentor Coaching Practice course introduces the purpose and value of the Mentor Coaching Specialization. It develops learners’ understanding of ICF mentor coaching, distinguishes mentor coaching from related professional roles, and builds familiarity with the ICF Mentor Coaching competency framework.
Throughout the course, learners explore mentor coaching as a developmental role focused on competency growth. The learning experience is grounded in observed coaching sessions, formative feedback, and ongoing development over time.
Credit for Prior Learning Pathway
This asynchronous eLearning module is designed for experienced Mentor Coaches applying for the ICF Mentor Coaching Specialization through the Credit for Prior Learning Pathway.
It fulfills the minimum 10-hour mentor coach education requirement aligned with the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies. Other MCS requirements apply.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The course moves beyond an overview of the mentor coaching process to focus on the capabilities that support effective practice. Learning is organized around the ICF Mentor Coaching competency framework, helping participants connect each competency with its associated behavioural statements and practical application.
The Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) – Foundations of Mentor Coaching Practice course consists of the following:
1. Introduction to Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS)
- Explain the purpose and value of the Mentor Coach Specialization.
- Define ICF mentor coaching and describe the ICF Mentor Coaching competency framework.
- Distinguish mentor coaching from other related professional roles.
2. Ethical Practice for Mentor Coaches
- Apply the Mentor Coaching Code of Ethics in practice.
- Recognize key responsibilities related to data security and protection regulations.
- Use ongoing learning and reflective practice to strengthen mentor coaching effectiveness.
3. Mentor Coaching Agreement
- Establish and maintain clear mentor coaching agreements.
- Structure a mentor coaching engagement in a way that supports the client’s development goals.
4. Mentor Coaching Process
- Use experiential learning in mentor coaching.
- Adapt the mentoring approach to the needs of the mentor coaching client.
- Identify and manage bias in the mentor coaching process.
- Co-create a development plan with the client based on observed growth needs.
5. Formative Appraisal
- Differentiate formative from summative evaluation.
- Practice critical listening to identify coaching competencies accurately.
- Support the client’s development through competency identification and partnership.
6. Feedback and Client Development
- Deliver useful feedback based on observations of coaching.
- Help clients uncover values and coaching styles relevant to their growth.
- Use modelling, guidance, feedback, and observation tools to support client development.
7. Group Mentor Coaching
- Understand group mentor coaching structures and approaches.
- Manage group dynamics and foster inclusive learning in group mentor coaching sessions.
- Design an effective group mentor coaching session.
Competency-Based Development
Each module or learning unit focuses on a core area of mentor coaching practice and combines structured instruction with applied learning and practice. Units may include quizzes, reflections, practice activities, and scenario-based assessments to reinforce understanding and support progress.
The eLearning portal dashboard provides a central hub for the full asynchronous program. Participants can access the sequenced learning units, work through topic-based lessons, complete assigned activities, and follow their progress through the Learning Management System.
Inside the Learning Experience
Within each unit, topics are broken down to address the behavioural statements associated with the relevant Mentor Coaching competencies. This focused structure and learning experience helps learners understand what effective mentor coaching looks like in practice and supports continuing competency development over time.

The course combines knowledge development with opportunities for reflection and application. Quizzes, practical activities, and scenario-based assessments help learners consolidate their understanding of mentor coaching practice.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
- Understand the purpose and role of mentor coaching
- Apply the ICF mentor coaching competency framework
- Practice ethical and reflective mentor coaching
- Set up and manage effective mentor coaching engagements
- Observe coaching and give constructive developmental feedback
- Facilitate individual and group mentor coaching effectively
TARGET AUDIENCE
The program is aimed at experienced ICF coaches who want to qualify or continue developing as mentor coaches, especially those pursuing the ICF Mentor Coaching Specialization.
Completion of this module addresses the minimum 10-hour mentor coach education requirement. Applicants must also meet the other applicable requirements for the Mentor Coaching Specialization.
- Hold an active ICF credential.
- Complete the applicable ICF assessor courses: ACC BARS, PCC Markers, and MCC BARS.
- Provide evidence of five mentor coaching clients who earned a credential within the past three years or provide verified service as a mentor coach within accredited programs during the past three years.
Participants must complete the full 10 hours of asynchronous learning through the Learning Management System. Completion is tracked through the LMS, and participants must finish all required course components associated with the 10-hour program, including the learning units and assigned quizzes or practical activities and assignment, to receive a certificate of completion.
This course is currently pending ICF accreditation under the Continuing Coach Education (CCE) pathway. Stay tune.
COURSE FEES
The program fees for this module is SGD $500.00 per participant.
